王阿吉一生嗜医好药,从白云山采药归来,就在自己开的药材铺里卖药诊症,一般病人服下他的三五味药便可病除身健。他的医德又好,不分贫富,不摆架子,只求为人医病。于是,大家都当他是自己人,惯叫他的乳名——阿吉。他年纪大了,自然就成了“王老吉”。
清道光年间,广州爆发瘴疠,疫症蔓延。为挽救患者,王老吉历尽艰辛,寻找良药,最终得一秘方,研制出一种凉茶配方,这种凉茶不仅解除了乡民的病痛,也帮助乡民躲过了天花、疫症等灾难。
王老吉从此声名大振,被誉为岭南药侠,还被清道光皇帝召入皇宫,封为太医院院令。1828年,王老吉在广州十三行开设第一间“王老吉凉茶铺”,深受街坊欢迎,被誉为“凉茶王”。
