1、动车组这个概念是将列车的动力单元由一个变为多个,像动力集中式动车神舟号,两端为机车中间为无动力的车厢,这样启动需要的牵引力就分散开不需要较大的启动力矩,列车整体制动反应时间也较普通的列车短,车厢间采用密接车钩减小车厢间的空隙,运行更稳定。

2、现在铁路上运行的动车组多为电动分散式动车,也就是一组车有好几个动力单元,将车列分为好几个不同的动力结构进行组合,像CRH2A型 采用的是四节动车四节拖车八节编组,从一端驾驶车到另一端驾驶车依次是 控制端拖车,动车,动车,拖车,拖车,动车,动车,控制端

3、动力安装在动车转向架上,一个转向架两个轮对,每个轮对由一台电机驱动,一节动车有两套这种动力转向架,也就是四个电动机做驱动力,整车有十六个驱动轮对,这样做的好处相比传统电力机车牵引的列车(6个电动机驱动,co-co模式)。

动力单元多,平均每个动力单元承担的驱动力或者是推进功率要比传统机车低很多,相对节省电力,车组启动时由一端驾驶车下达指令,通过电力统一启动分布在各车厢上的电动机产生推力,整车启动时间短,加速快,制动性能方面因为采用电空统一指令,驾驶端拉下制动手柄整车同时制动,动车组的制动距离就相对较短。

还有一个不同之处在于,传统的机车因为需要较大启动力矩所以轴重较大,机车自重一般在100吨左右,而动车因为整体推进不需要这么大的启动力矩,所以轴重轻,这样整体车组的重量就比较小,有利于提高运行速度,也有利于长时间高速行驶,通常动车重心较普通列车低,使动车获得更好的高速稳定性能。
