The purpose of this essay is to study Captain Ahab,the role in Moby-Dick, whose leg was bitten by the white whale in his process of the whaling. After losing his leg, he determined to revenge Moby Dick and tried to kill it. In order to revenge, Ahab ultimately dooms the crew of the Pequod (save for Ishmael) to death by his obsession with Moby Dick. By taking the comprehensive analysis perspective of Moby-Dick, this thesis will point out that the main characteristics of Ahab.
This paper consists of three parts. Part one presents an introduction to the Social Background and the life of the Author Herman Melvillehe ,Part two presents The Main Characteristics of Ahab. there are three aspects have been divided to analyze his characters: his monomania , his selfishness, and his individualism. Part three presents The Consequences of Ahab's Personality Tragedy.

The title of my paper is xx.I choose this as my topic due to the following reasons.
Firstly, I am very interested in the study of ambiguity. Ambiguity is a common phenomenon in all natural languages. As is known to all, in our daily conversations, ambiguity is often employed to achieve the effect of humor, thus creating a relaxing atmosphere and letting people feel at ease. Some jokes caused by ambiguity is very interesting.
Secondly, I have read several articles about ambiguity written by linguistics and scholars. I found my knowledge of ambiguity is very limited, superficial and nonsystematic. What I knew is just the tip of the iceberg. So I plan to learn more about ambiguity by this research.
Thirdly, I found many scholars have carried out numerous studies of ambiguity, but a majority of these studies are focused on single language separately. Articles about comparison between English ambiguity and Chinese ambiguity are not sufficient. So it is necessary to make further study.
For the above facts, I select this title.
Next, I will present the outline of my thesis. It consists of 7 parts.
The first part gives a brief introduction to the ambiguity and structure of the thesis.
The second part is literature review, briefly introducing the development of study of ambiguity and some scholarss main views.
The third to fifth parts focus on three types of ambiguity in English and Chinese: phonological ambiguity, lexical ambiguity, syntactic ambiguity. In every broad type, I respectively list some detailed branches and cite some vivid English and Chinese examples to explain these ambiguity phenomena. But I put more focus on the third part and point out two differences of ambiguity between English ambiguity and Chinese ambiguity.
The part six will point out positive results by using ambiguity deliberately in daily conversations, advertisements and literary works.
The last part is the conclusion.
I hope by this contrastive research, we will have a better understanding of ambiguity in English and Chinese and apply it to our life and study.
When reading the final draft, I still find my argument is not so comprehensive and improvements are needed. So welcome your precious suggestion.

应试教育向素质教育转轨要求改革教育思想、教育内容和教育方法，减轻学生负担，提高学生素质和教育 质量。德智体全面发展的素质教育的主阵地是课堂教学，主导思想是使学生积极投入学习活动，成为学习的主 人，独立地、主动地用有效的学习策略。而教师教的策略也是基于学生学习策略的基础之上的。为此，当前中 小学生英语学习策略的研究就显得分外重要。"条条道路通罗马"、"教无定法"。有些人常用这些话来说明外语教学用什么方法都无关紧要，人们都 能达到目的。问题是条条道路通罗马所花的时间、付出的代价、达到目的的程度却大相径庭。英语学习如何减 轻负担、提高质量，最根本的问题是提高学生的学习效率。因此，英语教学中培养学生积极主动、独立高效地 学习英语的能力比任何其他规定的目标更为重要。提高学生学习英语的效率可以用一个简单的公式显示："英语学习的最高效率＝时间、教学内容、负担量、成本和成绩的函数具体地说，英语学习的最高效率是指学生所花的学习时间最少、学习内容最多、学习负担最轻、成本最低 和学习成绩最高。这是我们要全身心地投入追求的目标。"（ 章兼中主编《小学英语教育学》P292，19 96年）国内外研究成果证明，学习效率与学习策略的使用有着正相关。为此，探索并总结积极、有效的英语 学习策略就成了减轻负担、全面提高学生素质和教育质量的重要途径。一、英语学习策略研究的兴起行为主义心理学认为大脑是一个黑箱。在黑箱中人的学习思维活动是不可测的，它看不见、听不出、摸不 着，难以观察、感知。有时学生学习时会出现一些外显学习行为，一方面这些外显行为并不能完全正确反映思 维活动的内隐因素，另一方面仅凭这些少量的外显行为也难以揭示学习思维活动的内隐因素和本质特征。五十 年代末到七十年代中期，随着现代认知心理学的产生，人们开始研究“不可测”的学生学习的思维活动和认知 过程。由此，学生英语学习策略的研究逐步受到重视并成为当前研究的热门课题之一。Brun-ner在A study ofThinking （1956）中研究了人工概念形成学习过程中的聚焦策略和扫描策略。Aron Carton 在The Method o f Inference in FL Study （1996）中研究了用不同的推理方法学习外语的策略并在1970年进一步区别了三种 推理策略：一是语内线索推理，用外语知识推理；二是语标线索推理和语外线索推理；三是用客观世界知识推 理。Flavell，Beach和Chinsky（1966）通过唇动次数观察此文共有14页 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14
